COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

The Patriot Library
March, 2003

The Patriot Library (TPL) acquires printed books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, prints and drawings, sound recordings, digital images, artifacts, and other formats in support of the TPL’s mission.
This is the TPL general policy that documents major collections and guides collecting in targeted areas. The current list of priorities covers areas in which we have fund support for purchases. Gifts in all areas are sought and considered.

COLLECTING RATIONALE
TPL acquires materials that support curiosity, teaching and research in areas that the United States Government might consider "dangerous” works in light of current domestic and international policies.

In accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Intellectual Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View, the Library is responsible for: making available the widest diversity of views and expressions, including those which are unorthodox or unpopular with the majority; opposing and challenging all attempts to impose censorship on the Library; and reserving the constitutional right of freedom of expression. TPL is a non-circulating library to further protect your right to privacy.

TPL strives to include representative materials related to the needs of cultural and racial minorities, as well as materials reflecting diverse social, religious, political or moral viewpoints as they may relate to the overall collection.
