What are some of the problems related to this issue?

A child born in the industrial world consumes and pollutes more over his or her lifetime than do 40 children born in developing countries. United Nations Development Programme, Human Development Report, 1998

In the U.S. about a third of the population is overweight. The United States makes up less than 5 percent of the total population on earth. Yet, they currently consume over 30 percent of all the resources. Green Networld, 2004

Over-consumption poses a very real threat to biodiversity. Carl Safina

Humans eat junk food, listen to junk music, read junk comics and spend endless hours playing video games.  Parents are losing the experience of bringing up children, housekeeping or nursing the sick; during their own youth, these functions had been handed over to others. Worst, junk values invade our homes via television.  Christopher Lash
